In-fans — Latin, "the one who cannot yet speak." It is the root of the word infant.

Moving into a foreign language, I became an infant again — rebuilding my mind from the ground up, touching the new world carefully, like something just born. With words out of reach, my thinking flattened into simpler shapes: sometimes cute, sometimes strange, always slightly other. The creatures here carry both — the round and lovable, the awkward and odd. They have mouths but no words yet. They are lonely and unsure, and still they long to connect.

This small world opens to those who come down to its level. Please pat the clouds, stroke the creatures, play with them. They are already speaking, in the only voice they have.
