Statement

Ruohong Li is a ceramic artist currently based in London. Her practice centres on what lies beneath romanticised surfaces — the simultaneous empowerment and disempowerment when the female body is aestheticised, the invisible labour concealed within domestic warmth, and the power imbalances embedded in seemingly harmless categories like "cuteness." She approaches these through a non-judgemental gaze — moving close, touching, and presenting what she finds as it is. Her material choices are always political: ceramics is bound to histories of holding, feeding, and sustaining; textile and fibre carry the weight of gendered, formally unrecognised domestic craft. She draws no line between vessel and sculpture, nor between studio and kitchen. For Ruohong, making is not a declaration — it is a form of connection.

Her current work explores cuteness as a condition of vulnerability. As an East Asian woman creating within the English-speaking art world, she understands this condition intimately. Her recent installations turn toward the state before language — that murmuring chaos where nothing is yet named, and nothing is yet apart. There, connection precedes comprehension. Her work does not attempt to convert this fragility into a narrative of strength, nor does it apologise for it — instead, it holds its ground quietly, inviting the viewer to reconsider how they approach what appears tender.
